The Grown Alchemist: 3 Things You Didn't Know About Australian Skincare

Founded by brothers Jeremy and Keston Muijs, The Grown Alchemist is a science-driven skincare line created in Melbourne, Australia during 2009

What do they mean by alchemy?

Through experimentation and engineering, alchemy is a practice that predates modern chemistry. Alchemy centers around the transformation of simple substances into something ideal, medicinal, or useful.  Nowadays, alchemy would probably be known as biotechnology. Biotechnology combines biology and engineering to create new products and technologies.

For instance, “baking bread is an example of biotechnology because it combines yeast (i.e. a living organism) with natural ingredients like wheat to create a desired product. Thus, even though fermentation is a process found in nature, this natural process can be optimized to create a product that betters humankind.

When it comes to skincare, this could mean using living organisms like probiotics to improve skin health and using the skin’s natural processes to unlock the potential of certain ingredients. For instance, because benzoyl peroxide releases oxygen upon contacting the skin, it can be used to reduce acne bacteria, a material that cannot tolerate oxygen. Thus, a natural process becomes an acne treatment. This is how biotechnology in skincare works, and The Grown Alchemist creates effective skincare based upon this ethos.

Why Australian skincare?

The themes of Australian skincare coincide with biotechnology. Australian skincare places an  emphasis on potent antioxidants, vitamins, and gentleness. It also emphasizes sun protection and how the environment can enhance skincare. Want to know even more benefits? Here are four core features about Australian skincare you may have not known.

Natural oils + Using the power of our natural environment.

In a humid environment, skincare with a variety of oils can become sticky on the skin. But, in a dry and warm environment like Australia, the skin’s sebum spreads further across the face because of increased fluidity (It becomes less thick). When this happens, sebum combines better with the antioxidant oils in skincare. Then, they travel further downwards and moisturize the deeper layers of your skin.

Highlights:
Acai-Berry extract: Filled with vitamins and antioxidants that increase glow, even complexion, and barrier protection.

Borago oil:  An oil native to Australia that works great on the skin in arid climates.
Camellia Kissi Seed Oil:  Southeast Asian, skin Barrier-boosting oil
Lavender oIl:  Offers anti-inflammatory properties and a sensorial experience.

Antioxidants + Adaptogens

Antioxidants destroy DNA-damaging particles on the skin and the vitamins. Australian skincare typically has an abundance of antioxidants.

Highlights:
- Niacinamide, Ashwagandha + Echinacea (cone flower) Skin Barrier Serum
- Ashwagadha is a powerful adaptogen. When ingested, adaptogens can help the body to manage stress. But, what about when applied topically? Some studies demonstrate that topical adaptogens can help the body maintain homeostasis, especially during temperature changes.
